Sustainable Tourism

While most people are unaware of all of the 23 declared protectorates of Egypt, everyone is familiar with the National Parks of Ras Mohammed and St. Catherine in the Sinai Peninsula.  Since the late 1980’s, the Government of Egypt, in cooperation with the European Union, has been developing a network of Protected Areas in South Sinai.  Four walking trails have now been mapped in St. Catherine.  Eco-lodges, though still relatively rare, are starting to sprout in Red Sea areas.  St. Catherine Protectorate’s planned eco-lodge in Wadi Gerba, for example, will be managed by the local Bedouins for their own sustenance.
Egypt’s other protectorates are as varied as the land:  the Petrified Forest near Cairo; Wetlands on the Mediterranean coast, in the Delta and in the Oasis Depression; on scattered Nile Islands (as many as 144) and Lakes, as far south as Lake Nasser; Geological Caves in Middle Egypt and the Eastern Desert, and Saharan Oases & Desert.

Wintering and breeding birds, remnants of nilotic vegetation, aquatic habitats of water-birds and wildlife (yes, the Nile Crocodile lives on!), rare ecosystems and exceptionally diverse flora created by “mist Oasis” all find their refuge in these protectorates.  Also protected are unique botanical resources, archaeological sites and mineral deposits, threatened species and native populations.

The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency is currently addressing the tourism sector through workshops to increase awareness of the importance of the conservation of natural habitats, wildlife and landscapes as significant assets for tourism.
