Montheism,Spirituality & Belief |

The first notion of monotheism occurred in Egypt in 1376 BC with Akhenaten, the so-called heretic ruler, when he established the unique cult of “Aton” against a predominant host of divinities. Egypt today houses a multitude of monuments that stand witness to the 3 monotheistic religions that have enriched its land: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Visit Mount Moses in Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments; or explore 4th & 5th century Coptic churches in the Old Cairo area, once visited by the Holy Family on their flight to Egypt. The 4th century synagogue of Ben Ezra and the 7th century mosque of Amr Ibn El-Aas represent other examples of the unique religious heritage of this country where the major religions have coexisted peaceably for centuries. |

Christian monastic life originated in Egypt, and Coptic monasteries abound throughout the land, in desert locations, on the Red Sea or along the Nile Valley, and can be visited en route or through specially planned visits. |
